Los Robles Health System is a Level II Trauma Center providing care for heart conditions including STEMI, a certified comprehensive stroke center, and provides complex orthopedics and spine surgery, drawing patients from across the state of California. Los Robles has a robust pediatrics program and its emergency room carries a highly desirable Los Angeles County Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics rating.
After thoughtful consideration, we will be closing our pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) program on December 16, 2020 to better meet the evolving needs of our community. Over the past year Los Robles has experienced a decline in the volume of PICU patients. At the same time, the need for our well-known expertise and our multidisciplinary approach in other pediatric specialties and services continues to grow, including surgery. By closing the PICU and focusing on the specialties and services that address the community's current needs, we will be better able to provide the most comprehensive and safe model of care.
In the meantime, we will work closely with the PICU team to maintain continuity of care for its patients and ensure a smooth transition to other community hospitals as needed. We will also continue to provide any needed inpatient pediatric medical surgical care, pediatric surgery, newborn care, neonatal intensive care and pediatric emergency care.
We are working with the impacted members of our care teams to find other career opportunities as our goal is to retain all of these employees.
This decision, while not an easy one, came after a great deal of consideration. We are confident it best serves what the children and their families of Thousand Oaks need most today.
