Our Total Joint Program has been carefully developed to accommodate the needs of our patients. We have made it our goal to create a program that is personalized and that allows each individual the ability to recover in the comfort of their own home after their stay at the hospital.
If you or a loved one may benefit from our total joint program at Los Robles Regional Medical Center, call us at (805) 370-4694 or use our Total Joint Program Contact Form to submit a question online.
Deciding to have surgery
Deciding on joint replacement surgery is a big decision. Whether it is for knee replacement, hip replacement or any other joint replacement, we want to make sure you have all the information you need for a positive experience and a successful outcome. We believe the more information and clear understanding you have about your total joint procedure, the better prepared you will be to recover quickly and get back to your normal activities.
Once you and your physician decide on a surgery date, you will be scheduled to attend a pre-surgical education class held every week. You will learn about what to expect before, during and after surgery. We will provide information, such as:
- Discuss your pre-surgery instructions
- Review home safety for a successful recovery
- Provide day-of-surgery instructions
- Explain your daily patient care map
- Review your discharge instructions
- Explain common terminology
Complete the following questionnaire that will help our team monitor your pre-operative educational class progress.
On average, the total surgery time is anticipated to last one to two hours with additional time for preparation, anesthesia and recovery. Our goal is to prepare you for discharge after a two or three day stay at our hospital, so that you can finish the recovery process in the comfort of your own home and return to your active lifestyle.
Preparing for your surgery
When preparing for your surgery, we recommend that you complete all required surgical clearance tests that your doctor has ordered. In order to facilitate this process, our hospital provides the following services:
- EKG tests
- Blood work
- Chest X-rays
Speak with your physician about the medications that you take at home, including vitamins and herbal supplements. This will allow your physician to make any modifications prior to your surgery. In addition, it is important to leave any medications that you have at home, unless instructed to do otherwise. We will provide all medications that you need to take during your hospital stay.
Upon your arrival, you will be registered and taken to our pre-surgical care unit to begin the preparation for surgery. You will be seen by an anesthesiologist and have the opportunity to ask any questions that you may have. Upon the completion of your surgery, you will be transferred to our Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) for the initial recovery phase. Once your physician has cleared you, you will be transferred to a private room to continue your recovery.
During the procedure, your friends and family will be able to wait in our comfortable surgical lobby. Our lobby is equipped with state-of-the-art patient tracking monitors that displays information through a personal code that is only made available to your designated family and friends.
Once you have been transferred to your private room, you will be introduced to the rest of your clinical team that will be working with you during the remainder of your stay. You will be oriented to your room and shown how to communicate with staff. Our nurses will provide you with all of your medications and assist you in managing your pain effectively. Each morning, you will be provided with an activity plan that describes the itinerary for the day. The developed plans will provide you with tips that you should follow and your physical therapy sessions.
Physical Therapy sessions begin the day of surgery and continue throughout your hospital stay. Our staff will work with you during your exercise program in regaining mobility and function following your surgery.
